The City of Tucson is investigating "Cool Community" mitigation
measures to reduce the heat island effect of hot roofing and paving materials.
They are using one of their Administration Buildings as a guinea pig to
investigate the effects of adding a cool roof, and cooler paving materials
and more trees & vegetation in the parking lots surrounding this building.
PositivEnergy has been hired to analyze the roof & pavement surface
temperatures, building energy savings, and the climate in and around the
building.
This project is divided into three stages. The first stage, monitoring the existing building and parking lot conditions, is underway. Monitoring equipment - much of it donated by Avatel - was installed in March 2000 to measure roof and pavement temperatures, building energy use, and the climate around the building. Stage two will install a new cool roof on the building. Stage three will repave and landscape the building's two parking lots.
